The Equinox isn't just a date on the calendar; it’s the moment the Earth holds its breath in perfect balance. What better time to honour this harmony with one (or all!) of the following rituals? These practices are simple but can have a profound impact. Read on to find your own balance this season...
Ritual 1: The Dance of Light and Shadow
Focus: Visualizing Balance
The simplest way to honour the Equinox is to mirror the sky. Since day and night are of equal length, we bring that harmony into our homes.
Take one white candle and one black candle. Place them either side-by-side or one on either side of your altar.
As you light the black candle, reflect on the rest and introspection winter provided.
As you light the white candle, welcome the growing heat and visibility of the sun.
Allow the candles to burn down an equal amount before extinguishing them.

Ritual 2: The Inventory of the Soul
Focus: Emotional Weight-Sharing
Mother Nature is currently undertaking her spring cleaning, and so should we.
In this ritual, we aim to balance the things we need to let go of with the things we are grateful for.
Divide a piece of paper into two columns: Release and Gratitude.
Start with what you want to release. Write a list of bad habits, thought patterns, or beliefs that no longer serve you. (My list will likely see me letting go of saying “I’m too old”—I’m only 42!) You might choose to burn this list in a bonfire or bury it in the earth.
Next, write your gratitudes. Try to balance this list in length with your "release" list. Keep this in your journal to look back on when things feel tough.

Ritual 3: The Altar of Fire and Ice
Focus: Elemental Contrast
This is a powerful sensory ritual representing the transition from frozen earth to the burning life-force of Spring.
You will need two containers that fit one inside the other (Pyrex bowls work perfectly).
Place a small amount of water in the larger container and float the smaller one inside it.
Tape the smaller bowl in place so the rims stay level, then fill the gap between the two with more water.
Add dried flowers, lemons, herbs or glitter to suit your practice.
Freeze for 24 hours. I will freeze mine in the freezer but feel free to place it outside if it is cold enough where you are.
Once frozen, remove the ice mould and place it on a tray. (You might need to use some warm water to do this)
Place a candle, a small pillar or a large tealight, inside the altar.
As the candle burns through the ice, acknowledge the fire of Spring releasing us from the dark months and igniting the spark of creation once more.
