How to Collect & Craft Magical Waters: A Guide to Storm, Sea, Dew, Sun & Moon Magic

Mid-summer has a way of slowing us down.
Especially this year, with multiple heatwaves, the cooling power of water is drawing us all in. (I have even bought a cold plunge pod in the vain hope it will help me stay cool!)
In magic, water is the element of emotion, intuition, psychic sight, and healing. But not all water has the same energetic signature. The gentle morning dew resting on a daisy leaf holds a completely different energy than the chaotic, lightning-charged rain of a mid-summer storm.
So, this month let's honour the spirits of the water and learn how to collect, store, and use magical waters. Grab a cool drink, and let’s dive in!

1. Storm Water: For Power, Momentum, and Boundaries
The energy shifts before a thunderstorm—even the most non-witchy people comment on it. The sky feels like it is squashing down on your head, the air feels heavy, and the heat builds up. Then suddenly, there is a purple flash, a rolling rumble, and the heavens open, releasing fresh, cooling rain that almost fizzes as it touches your skin.
This water has a fierce, dynamic, highly charged energy. It is infused with the power of thunder, lightning, and rapid atmospheric change, bringing that exact momentum to any working you use it in.
Best Uses: My favourite way to use storm water is in an aura spritz to break through stagnant energy and bring about that light, fresh feeling you get just after a storm. It can also be used to power up protection spells and wards, or to add an explosive punch to "return to sender" workings.
How to Collect It: When you feel a storm incoming, place a clean jar outside in a spot with clear, open access to the sky (this prevents dirty runoff from roof gutters or leaves contaminating your water). When you bring the jar back inside, remember to thank the storm for its gift.

2. Sea Water: For Cleansing, Banishing, and Releasing
Have you ever been for a swim in the sea and literally felt your worries melt away—felt that deep, zen feeling seep deep into your bones and soul? That is the ancient, grounding energy of the ocean.
Because the ocean is rich in sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium, it is the ultimate cosmic eraser. It doesn’t just wash away negativity; it neutralises it!
Best Uses:
Performing a door or floor wash when the energy in your home needs refreshing.
Cleansing crystals (that are water and salt safe!).
Washing away grief, trauma, or old emotional habits.
Anointing tools for psychic work.
How to Collect It: Walk into the surf with intention. Offer a small token of gratitude to the ocean first (a biodegradable offering like a splash of herbal tea or a kind word). I have also found that the tidal river near me (which I count as sea) is quite fond of fresh coffee; if I offer a splash, I will often get a little jump wave, which I take to mean they are happy!

3. Dew Water: For Glamour, Youth, and New Beginnings
This is the magic of the fairies in water form!
On the 1st of May, old folklore tells us that young women were encouraged to rise just before dawn and collect dew from their local hawthorn bush. Washing their face in this dew ensured youth, beauty, and vitality remained for another year.
Now, I am a night owl, so the thought of rising before dawn pains me! To this end, I cannot say I make a habit of collecting dew water, but it carries a deep folklore that makes it wonderful for:
Glamour magic and charm work.
Blessing new projects, business ventures, or fresh journal pages.
Inner-child healing—tapping into that childlike wonder of fairy magic.
How to Collect It: This takes a little patience! Head outside at dawn with a clean, soft cotton cloth. Drag the cloth gently across clean, chemical-free grass or flower petals, then wring the moisture out into a glass jar.

4. Sun Water: Life-Force Energy, Cleansing & Clarity
Nature’s ultimate summer pick-me-up! Sun water holds a vibrant, active energy—the power of the sun and all its possibilities. The sun burns away stale, heavy moodiness and leaves you feeling refreshed and clear-headed. (Though be careful: too much sun energy can leave you feeling frazzled and wired!)
Best Uses: Sun water is a wonderful ally when you need to put a rocket under a project, an idea, or even yourself. You can make and drink a sip before an important meeting to fire up your vitality and confidence.
How to Collect It: Simply fill a jar with clean drinking water, cover it with a lid or cloth, and place it outside in bright sunshine (or on a sunny sill). Allow the sun’s energy to infuse the water for an hour or two, then store or consume it right away.

5. Moon Water: Intuition, Calm, Dreams & Hidden Magic
Moon water’s energy is softer than that of the sun, but no less powerful. It can be created during any moon phase to capture that specific cycle, though it is most commonly made under a Full Moon for peak magical energy.
Best Uses:
Making small jars of moon water to put in a rollerball for drawing protective sigils on your skin when travelling.
Pet magic! My "witchling" likes to make moon water on the window sill for our pet guinea pigs by leaving their water bottle under the moonlight with an intention written on a slip of paper beneath it.
The "Internal" Moon Water Method: My absolute favourite way to harness moon water is to create it within myself. My body is made of roughly 80% water, so why not use that in my magic? I set a releasing intention before bed, leave the curtains open, and sleep under the moonlight for three nights around the Full Moon. The moon’s energy seeps straight into my cells while I rest, often bringing vivid dreams that show me what I need to let go of.
How to Collect It: The traditional way is to place clean water in a glass jar outside or on a windowsill under the moonlight overnight.

6. Tap Water: All Drains Lead to the Ocean...
Imagine you desperately want to share your news with the sea spirits, but your car has broken down and you live two hours from the coast. Are you just going to wait? You could... or you could harness the fact that the drain in your bathroom will eventually transport that water (and your message) all the way to the ocean!
Best Uses:
Need to tell the sea that an ex has resurfaced? Tell the water while you brush your teeth.
Need grounded sea support after a terrible day? Speak your woes into the shower water as it washes down the drain.
Tap water can also cleanse stuck energy inside us—drink a glass with intention, trusting that the stuck feeling will be released naturally when you pass the water.
How to Collect It: This is why tap water is so wonderful: it is piped right into our homes! No fancy rituals required. This makes it the ideal magic for busy mums, stressed students, people living in tower blocks, or anyone running low on spoons who still wants a little touch of magic in their day.

Storing Your Magical Waters
While we love the energetic properties of our water, we must remember that nature has a mind of her own. If not stored properly, natural waters will eventually spoil, turn green, and grow bacteria!
If you are collecting sun or moon water for drinking, please consume it immediately to stay safe. For waters used in spell work and cleansing:
Filter It: Strain your water through a fine mesh sieve or clean coffee filter to remove outdoor debris.
Preserve It: Add a splash of high-proof clear alcohol (like vodka) or a generous amount of sea salt to inhibit bacterial growth.
Label It: Always label your jar with the Type of Water and the Date it was collected.
Store It: Keep it tucked away in a dark, cool cupboard.
Water magic is all about listening to your intuition and flowing with the currents of life.
